Does Vitamin K Have a Role in CRPS (Complex Regional Pain)?

Medical Hypotheses generated makes a case for that scenario

Med Hypotheses. 2010 Apr 6. [Epub ahead of print]
Complex regional pain syndrome: A vitamin K dependent entity?
Ediz L, Hiz O, Meral I, Alpayci M.   abstract here

Their key points:

  • Vitamin K has anti-inflammatory effects
  • It prevent cell death and hence dysregulation
  • It is used up by trauma bleeding and fractures
  • Antibiotic use indirectly uses it up
  • Vitamin C increases its intake which is maybe why Vit C help prevent  CRPS
  • Vit K prevents bone loss in animal nerve damage cases
  • Vit K helps prevent post-stoke bone loss as per:

Sato Y, Honda Y, Kuno H, Oizumi K.
Menatetrenone ameliorates osteopenia in disuse-affected limbs of vitamin D- and K-deficient stroke patients.
Bone 1998;23:291–6.   abstract here

Other bone loss scenarios:
Bone. 2002 Jul;31(1):114-8.
Amelioration of osteoporosis by menatetrenone in elderly female Parkinson’s disease patients with vitamin D deficiency.
Sato Y, Honda Y, Kaji M, Asoh T, Hosokawa K, Kondo I, Satoh K.   abstract here

Nutr Rev. 2006 Dec;64(12):509-17.
Menatetrenone (vitamin K2) and bone quality in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Iwamoto J, Takeda T, Sato Y.  abstract here

“available evidence supports an effect of menatetrenone on bone quality during osteoporosis treatment”

——–

However, it was not great at preventing vertebral fractures:
J Bone Miner Metab. 2009;27(1):66-75. Epub 2008 Dec 12.
Randomized controlled study on the prevention of osteoporotic fractures (OF study): a phase IV clinical study of 15-mg menatetrenone capsules.
Inoue T, Fujita T, Kishimoto H, Makino T, Nakamura T, Nakamura T, Sato T, Yamazaki K. abstract here

“In conclusion, menatetrenone therapy was not effective for preventing vertebral fractures in the full analysis set of this study, but the results suggested that it may prevent vertebral fractures in patients with more advanced osteoporosis. ”
Comment – given that CRPS is in part a bone disease, theoretically Vitamin K should help. It would also implicate anyone on blood thinners as being a sitting duck for CRPS problems . Someone needs to research that and research if Vit K helps prevent chronic pain positions.

Any positions or comments on matter?
