Disposable insulated needles are not readily available but a 20 gauge cannula is easy enough to find…
Paediatric Anesthesia 2008 – An Innovative Nerve Stimulating Needle. K. Keskinbora
1) 20 gauge IV cannula – cut the plastic off 3/4 way around proximally so can insert a stim clip.
2) They are a little vague on how you are to connect to the cannula without removing the metal part so I assume you remove metal part and just use a suitable needle that can be threaded – like a 1 1/2 inch 25 gauge needle.
3) This covered needle was inserted and stimulated with a stimulator – though an acupuncture machine or a pointer plus could do.
4) For precise work (like a stellate ganglion block), they used a length of tubing as well. If tubing extension was not forthcoming, then they cut of the drip chamber from a drip chamber IV unit and attached a 3 way stopcock to that end.
I could use it to find cluneal nerve and peripheral nerves. Any comments?
