Patients with Irritable Bowel (IBS) Should Avoid Shift Work

Irregular hours are hard on people with IBS according to one nursing study

Am J Gastroenterol. 2010 Feb 16. [Epub ahead of print]
The Impact of Rotating Shift Work on the Prevalence of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
in Nurses.
Nojkov B, Rubenstein JH, Chey WD, Hoogerwerf WA.   abstract here

“Rotating shift nurses had a significantly higher prevalence of abdominal pain compared to day shift (81% vs. 54%, P<0.0001) and night shift workers (61%, P=0.003).”

Comment – Guess I will have to tell IBS victims the same as people with Bipolar – live boring lives – get up and go to be the same time everyday including weekends. Does look like they could get away with a night shift as long as it was a steady night shift…

Any comments?
