- cyst in maxillary sinus
- obstructs opening and causes retention of mucous
- can cause remodeling bone – so see bulgings in CT
Causes include
- chronic infection
- allergic rhinitis
- trauma
- prior surgery
- prior radiotherapy
- ?
Investigate with CT paranasal simuses
Symptoms: – cheek pain most common; can even include cheek numbness
- Surgical – Caldwell-Luc op – but annoying numbness face and cheek edema
- Better – drain cyst then Endoscopic marsupialize the mucocele
Comment – it is tempting to just give antibiotics for cheek pains but the definitive treatment is surgery.
