Cynical Sayings

I got a recent piece of spam that said:

God must love stupid people. He made SO many.
(My inner self is telling me I don’t need to go to the gym so I think there is a little of that in everyone…)

Anyway I thought I would start making a list of cynical sayings for no reason than I like them – feel free to contribute to the list…

“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so” – Mark Twain
This is the bain of doctors that think they know everything. One specialist who would not believe that an MRI would not show chiari – I had to tell him that he may not know everything and he did say point taken…. This is even worse with Doctors who think chronic pain is psychological and opioid addiction.

Another similar saying is:
“The greatest American superstition is belief in facts”

The woman’s health initiative study found for a fact that estrogends were bad for women. That was until people found the morons were putting even 80 year old on estrogen for the study. Looking at the under 60 year age group, though stroke rates were slightly higher; –  deaths were obviously less, osteoporosis less, Breast cancer rates LESS, and noticeably less heart disease (MRI’s could see lessening of cardiac artery calcium deposits).  This all changed over age 60 where it is no longer advisable – stay tuned “facts” on estrogens changes every few years…

…Normal men sane?…. Normal men have killed perhaps 100,00,000 of their fellow men in the last 50 years – R.D. Laing
I have so many pateints who want to be “normal” –  murderers one and all…

“Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored” (Aldous Huxley).
One doctor was using large doses of thyroid medicine to patients because they often felt better. Certainly, in recent studies, excessively high doses of B12 have been shown to help back and nerve pains. Thre is a strong proponent in the internet with longstanding cases studies, testifying that thyroid supplementation has this effect.  Use in older patients is fraught with atrial fibrillation issues so not a treatment for those over 50 or not cleared by a cradiologist.  This doctor lost his licence to full practice in this province and is doing operative work instead. I suspect in the future, these cases studies will show certain subgroups will benefit. However, while our college ignores that their could be some practical value to this, I won’t touch it with a ten foot pole. – yet this fact does not cease to exist.

No good deed goes unpunished…
On occasion, have gone the extra mile to help someone just to end up having complaints about it…

Life happens when you are busy making plans.
Life is not totally controllable.

If you wake up and you’re not in pain, you know you are dead.. Russian proverb
ouch…; another cynical version is: Life’s a bitch and then you die.” (English proverb)

or
“Life in hope  —  die in despair.
Despair is different from hopelessness. Despair is hopelessness combined with the realization that the thing you once hoped for doesn’t exist to hope for anymore.
People who administrate chronic pain patients often do not seem to understand chronic pain essence.  It is not the ouch that causes the problem, it is the despair and dread for the future which can be compounded by people who say things like “I can cut you off at any time” (told to one of my patients).  I have been using ketamine for this subgroup and getting some results, as it helps neuropathic level of pain and depression.

The happiest day of my life was when I realized I did not have to be happy today..
Recent study has shown a preoccupation striving for happiness was a real downer…  Life is the pursuit of happiness – elusive

In the end, everything is a gag. – Chalie Chaplin
I’ve heard it said certain other ways – like how some things one has spent a lifetime agonizing over, when one is dying – one will see was more like one big  joke being played on you – not important at all.
A good reason tho not take things too seriously…

“Scientists in the 19th century postulated that in time, the world would be taken over by morons. My belief is that this actually happened, but we are now too stupid to realise.” -Kirruth (from the web)
People in Canada use to have a Radio Shack where people couple get electronic components, manuals and kits to stimulate technical literacy in our kids. Now, that is gone and what replaced it has phased out most of it. How many kids learn out electronic things work? We have lost technical literacy in electronics and elsewhere…. Hail the morons of the future.

Here’s one that’s not cynical; but I need to remember  – Attention shouldn’t be centered only on pain, because pain itself is only part of the picture  –   Stefano Negrini et al 2008
